For NPR’s Anniversary Blend, we combine two roasts of coffee from Finca Nueva Armenia––a blend of a lighter and a darker roast. This approach brings juicy raisin notes, sweet dark chocolate flavors, and a heavier mouthfeel to the cup.
We’ve been purchasing coffee from Finca Nueva Armenia, located in Guatemala’s Huehuetenango region, since 2002. Jorge and Javier Recinos’ grandfather planted the first Bourbon-variety coffee trees on Finca Nueva Armenia in the 1940s and many of those trees remain and bear fruit to this day. Pruning existing trees decreases their yields for a few years, but ultimately keeps them productive. This practice––as opposed to replacing with new plants––speaks to the Recinos’ commitment to sustainability. In fact, the brothers pursued and attained both organic and Smithsonian Bird Friendly certifications long before a market developed for them.
Most coffee farms harvest once a year and we look forward to the arrival of coffees from our partners annually. Coffee from Finca Nueva Armenia is almost always our first arrival from Central America and the availability of this coffee in our warehouses signifies the joy and excitement of a new season.
